Here are some practical tips for packing breakables safely:
1. Gather the right supplies.
· Sturdy boxes (double-walled for extra protection)
· Packing paper or bubble wrap
· Packing tape
· Dividers for glasses/dishes
· Permanent marker for labeling
2. Line the box.
· Cushion the bottom with crumpled packing paper, bubble wrap, or even towels.
3. Wrap each item individually.
· Use packing paper or bubble wrap to wrap every fragile item.
· Secure with tape so it doesn’t unwrap inside the box.
4. Pack strategically.
· Heavier items go on the bottom, lighter on top.
· Place plates and bowls vertically (like records)instead of stacking flat.
· Use cardboard dividers for glasses and stemware.
5. Fill empty spaces.
· Stuff crumpled paper, foam peanuts, or soft cloths into gaps so items don’t shift.
6. Don’t overpack.
· Keep boxes under 40 lbs for easier lifting.
· Leave a little cushion space at the top before sealing.
7. Seal and label.
· Tape all seams securely.
· Clearly mark boxes “FRAGILE” and “THIS SIDE UP.”
👉 Bonus tip: If possible, pack valuables and very delicate items (like heirlooms) in your own car instead of the moving truck.
