Moving during cold weather takes a bit more planning, but with the right prep it can go smoothly. Here’s a practical, step-by-step guide to help you prepare.
1. Watch the Weather Closely
- Start checking forecasts 7–10 days out and keep monitoring daily.
- Have a Plan B for snow, ice, or extreme cold (flexible move date or extra time).
- Confirm your mover’s weather delay policy ahead of time.
2. Protect Your Belongings
Furniture & large items
- Use plastic wrap or moving blankets to protect from snow and moisture.
- Elevate boxes off the ground if snow or slush is present.
Electronics
- Cold can damage screens and batteries.
- Let electronics acclimate indoors for 24 hours before plugging them in.
Fragile items
- Pack with extra padding.
- Avoid leaving items in the truck overnight if temperatures are freezing.
3. Prepare Your Home(s)
- Shovel and salt driveways, sidewalks, and entryways.
- Lay down non-slip mats or cardboard inside to protect floors.
- Clear space near the entrance so movers aren’t tracking in snow or ice.
- Turn on heat in both the old and new place (even if vacant).
4. Dress & Pack for Safety
- Wear layered, warm clothing with waterproof boots and good traction.
- Keep gloves handy (both work gloves and warm gloves).
- Pack a “winter essentials bag” with:
- Hand warmers
- Extra socks
- Hats
- Towels for drying items
5. Plan Utilities & Logistics
- Ensure heat, electricity, and water are active at the new place before move-in.
- Keep a snow shovel and ice melt accessible at the new home.
- Allow extra time—winter moves almost always take longer.
6. Protect Movers (and Yourself)
- Offer hot drinks (coffee, tea, water).
- Clear paths frequently if snow continues during the move.
- Don’t rush—slips and falls are the biggest winter moving risk.
7. Prepare an Emergency Kit
Keep this easily accessible:
- Phone chargers
- Flashlight
- First-aid kit
- Ice scraper
- Snacks
- Blankets
